The Hawk Tuah girl and her team are under fire after the cryptocurrency they launched was rug-pulled. People who bought into the meme coin have now lost tens of thousands of dollars, as the scheme caused a sharp 90% plummet in market capitalization.

Haliey Welch became a viral sensation after a street interview, coining her now infamous phrase, “Hawk Tuah, spit on that thang”. Since then, she has quickly capitalized on it, starting a media career, complete with a podcast.

To go along with this, her team launched a cryptocurrency, or “meme coin”, with investors quickly taking to it. The market cap hit $490 million before the rug pull, the act of quickly dumping large quantities of an asset to profit.

One user on X posted that they’d lost their $35,000 investment and their life savings. Others on the Elon Musk-owned platform are claiming this didn’t happen.

Welch and her team have insisted that they haven’t sold “one token”. “OverHere” on X elaborated that the Hawk Tuah team had been locked for a year.

However, cryptocurrencies provide a public, trackable ledger of all transactions. The scheme was tracked online, with evidence showing that insider traders were selling off tokens for thousands of dollars.

According to those tracking the coin online, 285 wallets were included in the pre-sale. As soon as it opened for the public to invest, 89 of them sold immediately.

And now comes the fun part.

She and her team made a Twitter space to explain what happened.

YouTube investigator, CoffeeZilla, real name Stephen Findeisen, spoke with the team and Welch over X Spaces. During the heated exchange, Findeisen raised that someone had profited a million dollars off the back of what he’s labeled a scam. Those speaking for Welch would not clarify who made that money.

Welch continued in another X Spaces session but went to bed as the topic of salaries and earnings came up. One crypto trader has allegedly reported Welch to US authorities through the SEC.

Since the scandal, Welch hasn’t posted online since December 5 on X and three days ago on Instagram. It’s unknown whether she’ll offer further explanations on her podcast, Talk Tuah.
