While the successor to the Switch hasn’t yet been announced, Nintendo says it will be able to play current Switch games.

The news came through Nintendo’s midyear policy briefing, with the company sharing how over 100 million people worldwide play the Switch with the product still maintaining momentum.

The product was released in 2017, and the rumblings of a new device have been heard for some time now. Nintendo says it plans on “making an announcement regarding the successor to Nintendo Switch during this fiscal year.

“We believe that it is important for Nintendo’s future to make use of the Nintendo Account and carry over the good relationship that we have built with the over 100 million annual playing users on Nintendo Switch to its successor.”

Nintendo says details about Switch successor will come at ‘a later date’

The actual release date of the device isn’t yet known, nor have the details been discussed by the Japanese video game company. Further information is said to be announced at ‘a later date.’

Nintendo has, though, confirmed backward compatibility as the current software will be playable on the future device.

The company writes: “In addition to being able to play Nintendo Switch software they currently own, consumers will be able to choose their next purchase from a broad selection of titles released for Nintendo Switch.”

There will be more releases in terms of video games over the coming months, with a number of new titles already announced for release in 2025.

Nintendo has no plans of slowing down its game development output either, as it explains in the brief how it is expanding and enhancing its software development capabilities within the group.

From 2017 to 2024, the R&D staff has increased by 1.5 times through recruitment and acquisitions of partner game development companies. In the future, another development base will be built to strengthen capability.

Since its launch, the Nintendo Switch family of systems has achieved cumulative hardware sales of 146.04 million units, with software sales reaching 1.3061 billion units.
