Is Apple killing the Pro Max for an iPhone 17 Ultra?

DATE POSTED:March 11, 2025
Is Apple killing the Pro Max for an iPhone 17 Ultra?

Rumors suggest that Apple might unveil an iPhone 17 Ultra this year, particularly following the circulation of details regarding the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Potential features of the iPhone 17 Pro Max

Traditionally, the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models are similar, differing mainly in screen size and slightly in battery capacity. Occasionally, the Pro Max may receive exclusive camera features ahead of the Pro model. However, emerging rumors indicate that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have significant differences compared to the 17 Pro.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is anticipated to include a narrowed Dynamic Island thanks to “metalens” technology that could minimize Face ID components. Additionally, it may exclusively feature a vapor chamber cooling system coupled with a graphite sheet.

A significant change involves the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is expected to be 8.725mm compared to the 8.25mm of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This alteration aims to accommodate a larger battery in the new model, according to leaker Ice Universe.

Rebranding to iPhone 17 Ultra

The reported increase in thickness appears counterintuitive, especially with the launch of the iPhone 17 Air, which aims for a slim design. This move might indicate a desire to further differentiate the Pro line. The standard 17 Pro is projected to maintain its existing dimensions, weight, and battery life, while the 17 Pro Max will diverge significantly.

This approach is reminiscent of the comparison between the Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch Series 10. The Series 10 is thinner with an enhanced display and new features, while the Apple Watch Ultra is deliberately thicker and heavier, offering improved battery life and ruggedness.

Should Apple rebrand the iPhone 17 Pro Max to iPhone 17 Ultra, the lineup could consist of four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Ultra. The iPhone 17 would serve as the entry-level model with essential features at a lower price point. The iPhone 17 Air would focus on a slimmer design at the cost of additional cameras and battery life. The iPhone 17 Pro would feature the powerful A19 Pro chip and three rear cameras, while the iPhone 17 Ultra would provide the best battery life and display, catering to users seeking the most advanced iPhone available.
