Jason Lowe, a web developer from England, was jailed for abusing his position to siphon company funds into cryptocurrency to fund a gambling habit.
Lowe’s role was to be responsible for online manufacturing at a firm based in Lancashire, and he had worked there since 2016.
Across an 11-month spell, Lowe funnelled around £500k ($660k) of the company’s money by converting credit card transactions into cryptocurrency, before using this to gamble with.
As such, the company suffered major financial losses, and Lowe was eventually caught when the finance department noticed large payments made to businesses named “PPC Guru” and Meteorbrand”, which therefore sparked an internal investigation.
Furthermore, his personal bank account raised another red flag, with Lowe defending the large transactions via PayPal as the sale of his business, although this occurred in 2021.
In February 2024, an investigation was launched by the North Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit, and Lowe was subsequently sentenced to 33 months in jail on November 28.
North Yorkshire Police have their say on cryptocurrency fraudster“We are pleased with the custodial sentence handed down to Lowe, who shamelessly abused his position of trust to fund a gambling habit,” said Detective Constable Neil Brodhurst of North Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit.
“Even though the stolen funds were converted into cryptocurrency, we were able to trace the transactions and prove how he benefited.
“Fraud is never a victimless crime, and this case highlights the wider ripple effect of Lowe’s actions – undermining morale, trust, and financial stability across the workforce. We hope that today’s sentence sends a clear message to anyone intent on committing such crimes: abuse of trust will be uncovered and dealt with severely.”
In a study by UK Finance, fraudsters stole £629m during the first half of 2025, which was a 3% increase from the same period in 2024.
Additionally, there were over 2 million confirmed cases of fraud, representing a 17% increase from the first six months of 2024.
