FanDuel wields banhammer on customer for bad behavior at live event – maybe that will teach you to be nicer

Whatever your views on social media, you already know it is full of people you wouldn’t want to hang out with in real life. The majority of toxicity there is confined to keyboard warriors who rarely venture outdoors, but it can also be used as a place to brag and boast about your stupid real-world behaviour too.

It’s pretty satisfying then when then kind of stunt comes back to bite you in the ass as it has done for one fanDuel customer who recently bragged that his, ever-so-clever heckling of American sprinter Gabby Thomas had led to him scooping up the winnings on his bet.

Posting on X (where else?), the account said, “I made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made myh parlay win.”

An accompanying video of him shouting such gems as, “You a choke artist, Gabby” and “You going down, Gabby!”. It’s hard to see how Thomas could continue to compete after such deft putdowns, but Melissa Jefferson Wooden went on to win the race, leading to the player collecting wins of over $2000.

FanDuel, which accepted the wagers, was not impressed, however, and has banned the user, telling ESPN, “FanDuel condemns in the strongest terms abusive behavior directed towards athletes. Threatening or harassing athletes is unacceptable and has no place in sports. This customer is no longer able to wager with FanDuel.”

Grand Slam Track in Philadelphia has also launched an investigation. “We are working to identify the individual involved and will take appropriate action as necessary,” a spokesperson said. “We will implement additional safeguards to help prevent incidents like this in the future. Let us be clear, despicable behavior like this will not be tolerated.”

If there is a lesson to be learned from all this, not that it will be, is just be nice and enjoy your winnings folks.
