The Grand National is still one of the biggest events in British sport, drawing in fans from all over the world to watch what’s often called “the greatest steeplechase on the planet.”
It’s been around since 1839, and over the years, it’s earned a reputation as not just the most iconic race in the United Kingdom, but also one of the toughest endurance challenges in horse racing.
So, who are the favorites and what are the latest odds for the 2025 Grand National? If you’re picking a horse, our quick guide makes it easy.
Who are the runners in the 2025 Grand National and what are the odds?A maximum of 34 horses will line up at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England, on Saturday, April 5 for this year’s Grand National, and the full list of entries and those all-important handicap weights is now out.
At the five-day confirmation stage, six horses were withdrawn. That includes four that were guaranteed a spot in the race: L’Homme Presse, Capodanno, Velvet Elvis, and Minella Drama.
Fontaine Collonges and Quick Wave are also out of the running.
We’ll know the final field after the two-day declaration stage on Thursday (Apr. 3) morning, so stay tuned for that.
Unfortunately, Mr Incredible was ruled out even before those confirmations were made. The British Horseracing Authority stepped in and banned him from running, pointing to the fact that he hasn’t completed a race since March last year, pulling up or refusing to race in his last four starts.
Last year’s champion, I Am Maximus, is back to defend his title, but he’s got some serious competition. Leading the charge is Stumptown, trained by Gavin Cromwell.
He’s already being tipped as an early favorite and even held his own at Cheltenham.
Without further ado, using OddsChecker, here’s the odds for the 2025 Grand National so far.
Top odds at the 2025 Grand National StumptownOdds: 9/1
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell
Jockey: Keith Donoghue
Weight: 11st 2lb
He’s thriving over cross-country, winning four in a row, even carrying top weight at Cheltenham. The Grand National should suit him perfectly, and he might be Gavin Cromwell’s best shot.
IrokoOdds: 9/1
Trainer: Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero
Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr
Weight: 10st 11lb
Iroko looks built for the modern Grand National. A Cheltenham Festival winner with Grade 1 chase form, he’s still improving and has been trained specifically for this race. After a strong prep run at Kelso, he could be well-handicapped off a mark of 152 and ready to shine.
HewickOdds: 11/1
Trainer: Shark Hanlon
Jockey: Gavin Sheehan
Weight: 11st 7lb
Bought for just £800 ($1,031), he’s a fan favorite who’s won the King George, a US Grand National, and more. In great form, loves good ground, and always gives his all.
I Am MaximusOdds: 11/1
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Jockey: Paul Townend
Weight: 11st 12lb
Last year’s easy winner, he’s had two runs behind Galopin Des Champs this season. Skipped the Bobbyjo due to a respiratory issue, but there’s time to bounce back. He’s still in the running.
VanillierOdds: 11/1
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell
Jockey: Not known yet
Weight: 10st 6lb
He was a gutsy second to Corach Rambler in 2023 but only managed 14th last year. Now trying his hand at cross-country, he’s in better form this time. Don’t rule him out just yet.
Perceval LegalloisOdds: 12/1
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell
Jockey: Not known yet
Weight: 10st 12lb
He’s got a strong profile having had back-to-back wins at Leopardstown, including a big Christmas handicap. They’ve been running him over hurdles to mind his chase mark. One to keep an eye on.
Intense RafflesOdds: 14/1
Trainer: Tom Gibney
Jockey: JJ Slevin
Weight: 10st 10lb
The talented grey made a big splash winning the Irish National and has been cleverly campaigned since. He looked sharp in the Bobbyjo Chase and could be a major player at Aintree.
Minella CocoonerOdds: 14/1
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Jockey: Jonathan Burke
Weight: 11st 2lb
Third in last year’s Irish National and a Bet365 Gold Cup winner, he stays all day. He has faced tough company lately, including Galopin Des Champs. A return to a big handicap could suit.
HylandOdds: 22/1
Trainer: Nicky Henderson
Jockey: Nico De Boinville
Weight: 10st 6lb
A strong-jumping grey who prefers good ground. Still a novice, but improving. He was a solid second at Kempton despite some rain and could hit form now as the race suits up-and-comers.
MeetingofthewatersOdds: 22/1
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Jockey: Not known yet
Weight: 10st 7lb
Ran well to the last in last year’s race before fading to seventh, which suggests possible stamina issues. He has lightly campaigned since, with a quiet run over fences after a hurdles prep.
Kandoo KidOdds: 22/1
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
Jockey: Harry Cobden
Weight: 10st 11lb
Classy, lightly raced winner of the Coral Gold Trophy. Strong Topham third over an inadequate trip. Nicely weighted, prepped quietly at Newbury, and looks like the standout among Paul Nicholls’ entries.
