Is Jack Dorsey the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto?

DATE POSTED:February 21, 2025
A cinematic shot of the creator of Bitcoin standing in the shadows, wearing a black cloak. Their face is not visible. The background is blurred, with a city skyline. In the foreground, there are Bitcoin coins.

With the creator of Bitcoin still unknown, another theory on who it could be has emerged as people continue seeking the true person behind the Satoshi Nakamoto identity.

It’s this name that is referred to when speaking about the creator of Bitcoin, but it’s thought to be a pseudonym, with the person behind it active in the development of the cryptocurrency up to 2010.

Now, an X account user named Matthew Sigel who is the head of digital assets research at an investment management firm has shared he has “become personally convinced that Jack Dorsey – CEO of Square and founder of X – is Bitcoin’s founder Satoshi Nakamoto.

In the spirit of full disclosure, intellectual honesty, posterity's judgment, and rigorous debate, I would like to share my strong belief: I have become personally convinced that Jack Dorsey – CEO of Square and founder of X – is Bitcoin’s founder Satoshi Nakamoto. The user gave a lengthy run down on his personal belief, citing evidence that he believes to contain a “combination of technical parallels, circumstantial links, patterns (including timing), uncanny coincidences, motive and ability.”

Another person, named Sean Murray, is included within the X thread as being the ‘individual whose work most informed’ the theory.

What is the theory about Jack Dorsey being the alleged creator of Bitcoin?

In a closer look into the theory and the reason why Sigel thinks Dorsey could be behind it, he suggests that “Bitcoin milestones align with important dates in Jack’s life, including his parents’ birthdays.”

He also suggests that the Twitter founder has shown public admiration for similar works that align with Bitcoin’s foundational principles while suggesting that his residence ties symbolically to the coin’s branding.

The man even mapped out a timeline detailing Dorsey’s activities and whereabouts and attempted to link them to what Satoshi had known.

Although Jack Dorsey hasn’t yet commented on these lengthy X posts, he has previously denied being Satoshi Nakamoto.

In an interview with Lex Fridman in April of 2020, he said “No, and if I were, would I tell you” when asked directly if he is the person behind Bitcoin.

I'm not Satoshi.

Several other theories have circulated over the years, with one of the latest being when documentary director Cullen Hoback claimed Canadian software developer Peter Todd is the inventor.

He featured this within the documentary, which received criticism, with Peter Todd denying it publicly.
