Long-lost Windows 10 Andromeda firmware surfaces for first-gen Duo

The third-party DuoWOA Project has released Windows 10 Andromeda OS firmware and installation instructions for the first-generation Microsoft Surface Duo, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration among enthusiasts.

This development allows users to install the Andromeda OS, which Microsoft reportedly developed for the device before switching to Android ahead of its release. The project noted several functionalities remain inoperative, including sensors, cellular data, sleep mode, and brightness control, requiring additional adaptation. Elevated device temperatures are typical when running Andromeda OS, according to the team.

The commercially released Surface Duo featured two 5.6-inch, 1800×1350 resolution AMOLED panels, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage. It included a 3,577 mAh battery with 18W charging support.
