Marvel Rivals – Nexus Mods stands firm on removal of Trump mod despite death threats

DATE POSTED:January 9, 2025
Trump in Marvel Rivals

Ah, politics, politics, politics. If ever there was something that didn’t need an incessant creep into everything else in existence it’s politics. Marvel Rivals you would be safe to assume shouldn’t be a haven for political beef, but this is an online game in the internet age so, well, yeah, you would be wrong.

Over the past few weeks staff at UK-based Nexus Mods – a highly-popular site that hosts tens of thousands of mods for games big and small removed some recently added mods that changed Captain America’s head in the game to that of Donald Trump (along with similar mods for Biden and Obama) in line with its policy for not allowing political or hateful content to be hosted there.

Obviously, whenever anything like that happens sections of society will scream “censorship!”, more people who previously did not care will jump on board and before you know it you have a pile-on of silly proportions.

On Tuesday Nexus Mods owner TheDarkOne told PC Gamer that following several YouTube influencers click-baiting that Trump had been removed from the game had caused the team to receive abuse and threats of harm, saying, “Case in point, today, with all the nutjobs coming out of the woodwork sending us death threats, calling us pedos and all the other ‘wah wahs’ that come with this ridiculous situation because some YouTuber told them we are only removing Trump mods,”

“I’m not expecting any of my staff to have to handle these whackjobs any more than showing them the door either. So we delete all the mods we see/that get reported to us on the topic, and all the people this upsets can trot on because it’s really not worth our time or effort to care about.”

By removing the Trump mod, we are simply executing our existing file submission policies. What has been overlooked in much of the conversation is that we also removed other mods featuring US Presidents uploaded to the site for Marvel Rivals, such as Biden and Obama.

The situation has failed to calm down much and has now led to Nexus posting a statement on its X account saying:

“We wanted to address the recent discourse over the last couple of days, including the weekend, regarding the political mods released and subsequently removed from our site for Marvel Rivals.

There has been a lot of misinformation circulating on this topic, which we’d like to quickly clarify and put to rest. Nexus Mods has always been about building a positive modding community.

Unfortunately, some of the content uploaded to the site becomes a magnet for conflict, division, and mob harassment.

In 2020 we updated our Terms of Service to state that we would remove any American political mods from our site.

By removing the Trump mod, we are simply executing our existing file submission policies. What has been overlooked in much of the conversation is that we also removed other mods featuring US Presidents uploaded to the site for Marvel Rivals, such as Biden and Obama.”

X being X the responses to the statement have not exactly been positive but if you want to mod Trump or any other President into your game the mods are still available on other sites.
