Mental health challenges faced by casino staff in Macau, according to study

DATE POSTED:June 6, 2025
AI image to depict Macau skyline at night / Sam Hou Fai, the Chief Executive of Macau, has intimated that the government will oversee the conclusion of the satellite casino transition process in accordance with recognized legal procedures.

Researchers in China are calling on the state government to provide and promote counselling services to casino workers in Macau after a study revealed significant mental health challenges, including extremely high levels of stress, were being reported by employees.

The Macau News reports that the study, conducted in 2024 by the Chinese Federation of Analytical Psychology, in collaboration with the Macau Gaming Industry Employees Home and the City University of Macau surveyed approximately 700 casino employees in the city and followed up with in-depth interviews with 16 employees who were reporting experiencing depression and anxiety within a two-week period.

Chou Wai, academic advisor for the study, cited factors such as “work intensity, economic pressures, conflicts over time arrangements and corporate management systems as contributors to their emotional distress.”

Researcher Ying Zhe Hua said the study showed that working within the gambling industry brought with it higher levels of stress, with uncertainty about the future of the industry among top concerns for the younger employees within the casino workforce.

You can check out the full interview via this link, but the study has urged the Chinese Government to look into the issue and provide necessary support and intervention.
