As TikTok and Bytedance’s suite of apps went down, including its video editor CapCut, Meta has swung in to announce “Edits”. There’s not much information about the app, outside of what Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri has posted to Threads, Meta’s X/Twitter competitor.
While TikTok is back online for its US audience, CapCut remains offline for the time being. It’s assumed these will come back online in time, but it hasn’t stopped Meta from mobilizing.
Edits will launch next month on Apple’s iOS, with the option to “pre-order” the app right now. It gives us a small insight into how the app will look, which is quite similar to CapCut.
Android users will need to wait longer, as Mosseri only says “soon” for its release date.
">On Threads, Mosseri said, “Edits is more than a video editing app, it’s a full suite of creative tools.
“There will be a dedicated tab for inspiration, another to keep track of any early ideas you might have, a much higher quality camera which I used to record this video, all the editing tools you’d expect, the ability to share drafts with friends and other creators.”
CapCut is directly integrated into TikTok, providing a quick way to edit videos a little further than what’s available on TikTok itself. It’s quickly become social media managers’ go-to, with its toolset easy to access and intuitive to use.
It’s not clear if Edits will be as integrated into Meta’s suite, but Mosseri says it’ll provide “powerful insights” into how videos perform.
Meta’s Edits app met with jokes as it copies CapCutThe announcement has been met with some jokes about Meta’s portfolio of apps and tools. One account “justbesocial_marketing” ">said, “So your boss lobbied for a TikTok ban… and [is] now offering the Temu version of CapCut.”
Another ">suggested that Instagram should display photos and videos that friends upload onto the social network.
In a recent interview, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said that Apple hadn’t “invented anything great in a while” and lost its innovation.
