Nvidia’s AI miscalculation means more RTX 5090s for gamers

Nvidia is set to significantly improve the supply of its GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards next month, according to well-known leaker MEGAsizeGPU. The company will repurpose excess GB200 wafers from its data center chips into consumer-grade GB202 chips for the RTX 5090 due to lower-than-expected demand for data center offerings.

Following the initial launch of the RTX 50 series, which faced challenges including a lack of supply and performance issues, nearly all units quickly sold out, with few models remaining available. Retailers had anticipated a lengthy wait for new RTX 50 inventory. However, the new supply stream is expected to improve on-shelf inventory within about a month, taking into account manufacturing and shipping delays.

Nvidia’s partners, including MSI, Zotac, and Gigabyte, will reportedly receive significant quantities of the reallocated GB202 chips. Reports suggest that this ramp-up in RTX 50 production is necessary, especially with AMD preparing for the RDNA 4 reveal scheduled for later this month.

Allegedly, the underperformance of the Blackwell data center chips, particularly the B200, has prompted this shift. Currently, almost 90% of Nvidia’s revenue is derived from data center sales, indicating a substantial drop in demand to warrant reallocating resources to the consumer market. Consumer-grade GPUs are not as profitable as AI accelerators, making this decision noteworthy.

Additionally, AMD is expected to launch its RX 9070 family, aimed primarily at the RTX 5070 Ti, which utilizes a cut-down GB203 die. Despite having the opportunity to leverage Nvidia’s supply shortages if RDNA 4 had been released in January, this latest supply rumor suggests AMD may need to adjust its pricing strategy to remain competitive.

For consumers considering an upgrade, it is advisable to wait for independent reviews before making any purchase decisions, especially given the imbalance in market supply and upcoming product launches.
