Parseword: The new wordplay challenge from the mind behind Wordle

The new wordplay challenge from the mind behind Wordle

Josh Wardle has launched a new daily puzzle game called Parseword. The game utilizes the mechanics of cryptic crossword clues. Parseword asks players to perform actions such as finding synonyms, reversing words, identifying homophones, removing letters, or combining words to solve puzzles. The game includes a tutorial and a hint system to assist users.

The new game represents a shift toward more complex gameplay compared to Wardle’s previous release. This complexity suggests Parseword may not achieve the same mass appeal as Wordle. The game appears geared toward a niche audience of puzzle enthusiasts.

Wardle cited inspiration from *The Last of Us* showrunner Craig Mazin. Mazin discussed cryptic crossword logic on a podcast, which prompted Wardle to develop the concept. Wardle collaborated on the project with former Reddit colleagues Chris Dary and Matt Lee.

The game uses clues constructed by Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon. Cox and Rathvon are long-time cryptic constructors who granted permission for their work to be used in the application.

Wardle originally released Wordle in 2021. He sold the game to The New York Times for a seven-figure sum in 2022. The market has seen numerous daily games attempting to replicate Wordle’s success in recent years.
