Record number of illegal gambling sites blocked by Danish Gambling Authority

The Danish gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has cracked down on illegal gambling sites as it blocks 178 in the latest case.

The court at Frederiksberg ruled in favor of the regulator on Thursday (June 26), ordering the Danish internet service providers to officially block the sites.

This is the highest number so far in a single blocking case since 2012, with the Danish Gambling Authority previously conducting only one case a year in court to have the sites closed. Since 2024, the cases have been brought before the court twice annually.

“It is of course frustrating that illegal gambling sites continue to appear targeting Danes,” says Anders Dorph, Director of the Danish Gambling Authority.

“But I am very pleased that we have tools to find the sites and that we manage to get them blocked. In 2023, we took the initiative to have the sites blocked twice a year instead of once.

“This means that we can more quickly shut down access to sites that do not have a Danish licence and where consumers do not have the same protection as those gambling operators who have a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority.”

Once it has been assessed that a website is offering gambling illegally, the operator is first asked to stop the offer. If this doesn’t happen, telecommunications providers are then contacted who are asked to block access to the specified websites.

After, the telecommunications providers ask the court’s word that the sites are illegal and that they have to shut down access to the websites.

The warrant for blocking access, according to the Danish Gambling Authority, is done with a DNS blocker. If someone is trying to get onto a website which has been banned, they will be greeted with a page with information about the site being illegal and blocked by the regulator.
