Six student athletes found to have manipulated bets by the NCAA

Six basketball student athletes have been found to violate NCAA betting rules, leading to expulsion from their respective schools.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions has uncovered violations from six student athletes who formerly competed in men’s basketball at New Orleans, Mississippi Valley and Arizona State. The cases are not thought to be linked, but all saw the players violate rules around betting-related game manipulation or student athletes providing information to known bettors.

All three cases also saw the students knowingly provide false or misleading information to the NCAA investigators, according to the organization’s documents. All six students, Cedquavious Hunter, Dyquavian Short, Jamond Vincent, Donovan Sanders, Alvin Stredic and Chatton “BJ” Freeman, are longer enrolled at their schools, and are permanently ineligible for student-athlete reinstatement.

The violations first came to light in February 2025, after the NCAA received a tip-off about potential basketball game manipulation. The game in question took place on December 28, 2024, where Short told a fellow student to stop scoring points. The same student told the NCAA that he heard Hunter, Short, and Vincent discussing a third party placing a bet for them.

All three students were suspended for the rest of the season pending an investigation. Subsequent inspection of texts on their phones showed they expected to receive $5,000 for manipulating the bet.

For Sanders and Stredic at Mississippi Valley, the NCAA enforcement staff contacted an integrity monitoring service to review the school after the aforementioned tip-off in New Orleans. That report found suspicious activity at a January 6 game, leading to further investigation.

Sanders was then found to have discussed “throwing a game” on the phone with a third party, and later admitted that he and Stredic were offered money to throw the game by performing badly in the first half.

The last case took place at Arizona State, with Freeman found to have passed on insider information to then-student athlete Mykell Robinson from Fresno State on four separate occasions between November and December 2024.
