Meta’s Threads will begin testing a separate direct message (DM) inbox, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This update will allow users to chat within Threads without switching to Instagram. Initial testing will occur in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina.
The feature is currently limited to one-on-one conversations, excluding group messaging. Meta intends to expand the rollout to additional locations following the initial testing phase.
The development addresses the differentiation in follower networks between Threads and Instagram, acknowledging some Threads users may not actively use Instagram. Previously, Instagram explored integrating Threads DMs directly into the Instagram inbox.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, had suggested aligning the Instagram inbox with Threads in 2023, based on the assumption of similar followings across both platforms, an assumption Meta later found to be inconsistent.
Threads launched in July 2023, leveraging Instagram’s existing network to quickly connect users. However, Meta observed the formation of distinct networks on Threads, resembling those of platforms like X and Bluesky, prompting the development of a separate DM inbox.
Meta stated the decision to introduce the separate DM inbox stemmed from user requests for dedicated one-on-one conversations within the Threads app, eliminating the need to switch between applications.
