WhatsApp video calls could soon be integrated into Google Messages, code revealed

Google Messages could soon allow people to video call through a WhatsApp integration, according to some code found through an APK teardown.

This comes as its users can already initiate Google Meet video calls, but the new finding suggests it could switch out the feature for another or simply allow people to utilize Meta’s messaging platform instead.

The information was found through Android Authority/Insights, a technology-focused publisher that regularly looks into behind-the-scenes codes. An APK teardown aims to predict features that could arrive in the future through looking at work-in-progress code.

When using Google Messages, the video call icon leads to a Google Meet call. While they’re both owned by the same company, people have to download the video communication service to be able to use it.

The team who found the code were able to activate a WhatsApp Call through the unreleased feature, with the video call icon including a drop-down option for the Meta-owned app. This might not be visible for those who don’t already have the instant messaging app downloaded.

The insights have found that the behavior only works for single-user chats, with group-based chats still only seeing the original option.

While the code hasn’t been made public, nor has any announcement been made on whether this could happen, it would be a huge feature addition for Android users. The company has long had a reliance on first-party services, so this would represent a significant change-up.

It would take away the need to redirect to another app, making it easier and smoother for people to video call. Google Meet has also become synonymous with a work-related meeting app, while WhatsApp is more set up for the everyday user.

Again, it hasn’t been confirmed but another rumor suggests that Google Messages could see a merging of its camera viewfinder and gallery picker to create a more seamless experience.
