In the highly anticipated Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you will embark on a new adventure set in a futuristic version of the Kalos region, specifically focusing on Lumiose City.

As with previous titles, selecting a starter Pokemon is a pivotal decision that shapes the early stages of your journey, and with Z-A, this is no different.

Here, we’ll take a look at what the three starter Pokemon are in Pokemon Legends: Z-A so you can get your favorite locked down ahead of the release date.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A starters explained

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the trend continues from Pokemon Legends: Arceus, where starters were chosen from different generations.

This more diverse line-up offers you a unique blend of well-known Pokemon and evolution paths, enriching your gameplay experience as you explore the reimagined Kalos region.

The Pokemon Legends: Z-A starters are Tepig, Chikorita, and Totodile, giving you the choice of whether you want to go all the way back to the year 2000, or opt for a more recent ‘Mon.

Tepig is the Fire-type starter from Generation 5 — Pokemon Black and White — where Lumiose City was first introduced. Tepig evolves into Pignite and ultimately into Emboar, gaining a dual Fire/Fighting typing which can be useful for overpowering opponents in battle.

If you’re unfamiliar with Chikorita, it is a Grass-type introduced in Generation 2 (Pokemon Gold and Silver). Known for the leaf on its head, which it uses to sense temperature and humidity, Chikorita evolves into Bayleef and then into Meganium, completing the full ‘blossoming’.

And finally, we’ve got Totodile. Totodile is a Water-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 2 alongside the aforementioned Chikorita. Totodile evolves into Croconaw and then into Feraligatr, a powerhouse known for its impressive physical attacks and intimidating presence in battles.

All in all, it’s nice to see both Totodile and Chikorita after the inclusion of Cynaquil in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. With Tepig in the mix too, representing the first adventure in Kalos, there’s a good selection of starters that many will be over the moon with.
