Amazon has announced a refresh of its Fire HD 8 tablet, with the latest edition set to be enhanced with generative AI features.

The new device will also contain more RAM and an improved 5MP rear camera, starting with the 3GB RAM version with 32GB of internal storage. That will be complemented by the 4GB RAM offering, which comes with 64GB capacity.

There will be plenty of familiarity with the new Fire HD 8 as certain specs remain unchanged. This includes the 8-inch screen, the 2MP front camera with 720p recording capability, and 13 hours of battery life.

Consumers will not need to purchase the Amazon Fire HD 8 to experience the upgrades, the same tools will be coming to the Fire HD 10 and Fire Max 11

With the built-in AI, users can utilize a writing assistant that works with all of the tablet’s apps, not just the native Amazon apps. Using the Amazon Silk web browser, AI can assist with a web page summary to provide a synopsis of the content you are viewing.

In other Amazon news, users of Prime’s ad-supported tier should expect to see more commercials next year. Kelly Day, Amazon’s VP of Prime Video International intimated the volume of ads would “ramp up a bit more into 2025”.

The company is said to be considering an upgraded Alexa service, which could come at a cost, but there was no mention of it in the announcement on the Fire HD 8.

Amazon launches additional Fire tablets for kids

The US tech multinational has also showcased two tablets aimed specifically at children.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids will cater for youngsters aged three to seven, while the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro will be aimed at those aged six to twelve. These tablets come in a new range of colors and cases, including exclusive Disney covers for an added personal touch to get the most out of the books, games, and videos on the device.

You can snap up the new Fire HD 8 now, in black, emerald, or hibiscus, for $54.99 thanks to Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days. The tablets have a standard retail price of $99.99 while the Fire HD 8 Kids can be purchased now for $69.99, around half the usual price.
