Avowed may well be the next big thing in this early part of the year, but we know what you are thinking, with the game releasing so close to Valentine’s Day, surely you can look forward to a little romance and hanky-panky? After all, all the best RPGs let you get up close and personal with your companions. All you need to do generally is say the right things and maybe go on a few dangerous quests – much like romance in real life.
But does Avowed allow any of this? Let’s have a look and find out.
Can you romance companions in Avowed? It seems it is nothing but bad news for all you love doctors out there as, unusually for a game of this nature, Avowed doesn’t let you seduce your companions. Nope. You can fight with them, eat with them, and talk to them, but anything else is off the table. In a way it’s kind of refreshing as you don’t feel the urge to see if you can try and get off with everything that moves
But baby….Avowed’s Game Direct Carrie Patel explained it all in an interview recently.
“It’s a ton of work. You want to make sure you do it right. And part of that is also you want to make sure that a player who opts not to romance but still wants to have a very deep relationship with those companions gets to have just as thorough and meaningful an experience on a friendship or ally path as [if] they went on a romance path. And so we felt that we could best tell our companions’ stories and our players’ relationships with them without the romance option”
So looks like your time in avowed is going to be spent not just thinking about having your wicked way and falling in love. You might have to do some actual adventuring for once.
Why can’t you romance in Avowed? To be fair, Obsidian games don’t generally include a romance option for your character. It seems the developer is more concerned with you playing the actual game the way it should be played than constantly thinking about getting frisky with NPCs.
