The software company Canva is continuing its pursuit of AI-powered additions as it launches ‘Dream Lab,’ a new text-to-image generator.
The feature was officially announced on Tuesday (October 22) through a company news update, with it launching for users on the same day.
“Meet Dream Lab, our new image generator designed to transform text prompts into stunning visuals,” writes Canva’s co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins in the release.
The AI generator will be powered by Leanorado AI’s Phoenix model. Phoenix is its first foundational model, with users able to input a prompt or detailed instructions to receive an AI-generated image in return.
It was in July of this year when Canva shared it had acquired Leonardo AI in a bit to expand its generative AI capabilities.
“Whether you’re designing marketing materials, crafting storyboards, refining your brand’s visual identity, or exploring entirely new concepts, Dream Lab seamlessly turns imagination into reality.”
Canva’s Dream Lab will offer a range of creative controls to help creators “achieve the perfect style and theme…” This includes choosing between ready-made presets or uploading content from personal libraries to fine-tune the visuals. When inputting your own content, 3D renders can be created through the AI tool.
Multiple images can be generated at once too, with these able to be refined and customized before adding them into a design.
Canva unveils more AI changes to its graphic design platformIn its ‘Droptober’ announcement, a new ‘captions’ feature was introduced which will make it easier for people to automatically generate captions for videos.
This will be rolling out soon, along with the ability to edit, animate, and style video captions to match brand guidelines.
For the already established ‘Whiteboards’ tool, a new ‘Sort’ feature is now available which lets users organize sticky notes in one click – grouping them by color, author, reactions, or themes to highlight ideas.
The AI text generator Magic Write has had an update too. This is powered by OpenAI and now features “smarter suggestions” as it can analyze an entire document to “generate more accurate and relevant content…”
It now has new iterative capabilities too, so users can input commands like ‘more like this’ or ‘this, but’ to refine and fine-tune the output of text.
It’s also had a speed boost, with content appearing as it’s being generated. Canva says this will allow people to “quickly adjust” if it’s not quite right, without having to start over again.
