Donald Trump’s campaign say they were hacked by ‘foreign source’

Donald Trump’s campaign team has said some internal communications have been hacked and believe they were illegally obtained by foreign sources.

On Saturday (August 10) the news site Politico reported that it had been emailed campaign documents at the end of July. This included internal research on Ohio Senator JD Vance who is Trump’s running mate.

This came from an anonymous account with an AOL email who identified themselves as ‘Robert.’ The account sent over a 271-page research dossier detailing Vance’s record and statement as well as some of his previous criticisms of Trump.

The person also said they had a variety of documents from Trump’s legal and court documents to internal campaign discussions.

The BBC has spoken with a campaign spokesperson who believes the leak has been done by “foreign sources hostile to the United States.”

There have been suggestions that this was done by Iranian operatives, but the team at Trump’s campaign haven’t provided any evidence linking this apparent connection.

Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center has released a report titled ‘Iran steps into US election 2024 with cyber-enabled influence operations.’

The report states: “Over the past several months, we have seen the emergence of significant influence activity by Iranian actors.

“Iranian cyber-enabled influence operations have been a consistent feature of at least the last three US election cycles. Iran’s operations have been notable and distinguishable from Russian campaigns for appearing later in the election season and employing cyberattacks more geared toward election conduct than swaying voters.”

“Recent activity suggests the Iranian regime—along with the Kremlin—may be equally engaged in election 2024.”

In a statement to US media, Iranian officials have denied any connection to the alleged hack.

An Iranian spokesman said in a statement to the Washington Post: “We do not accord any credence to such reports.

“The Iranian Government neither possesses nor harbors any intent or motive to interfere in the United States presidential election.”
