Factorio’s Space Age DLC helps the daddy of factory games smash through it’s Steam record, bringing players flooding back

DATE POSTED:October 22, 2024
Factorio Space Age expansion

Regular readers of Readwrite Gaming will know that am I currently deeply embroiled in the wonders of Satisfactory, but there exists a potential timeline in an alternate universe where the unthinkable has happened and Satisfactory does not exist because the game that brought the genre to such a wide audience, Factorio doesn’t exist there. Sad times.

Fortunately, in the universe we inhabit, Factorio does exist and forged a path for what was to follow – games such as Satisfactory and Shapez, bringing the joys of (straight!) conveyor belts to the masses.

2020’s Factorio may look more “retro” than the games that followed its forged path, but almost five years on, its Overwhelmingly Positive review status from over 150,000 reviews stands testament to what a game this is.

Now, with the double release of the long-awaited Space Age DLC coupled with Factorio version 2 on Steam, new players have been joined by those flooding back to the game taking the game to hit a record high for concurrent players of over 90k.

Space Age is the first major expansion for Factorio since launch and it seems the game is still loved enough to have encouraged a good few re-downloads.

The expansion is priced at $35, which is the same as the current base game’s price, and “continues the player’s journey after launching rockets into space” – assuming you ever got that far in the original game.

Built atop the new Factorio v 2.0, some of the features of which you can read below, Space Age pushes this classic factory management game back to the fore at a time when many AAA live-service games are struggling.

Sometimes, maybe people just want to get lost in a world that they themselves created.

Factorio 2.0 features:
  • Smarter worker robots
  • New rails
  • Remote view
  • Combinator and circuit network improvements
  • Train control improvements
  • New fluid system
  • Overhauled Nauvis terrain generation
