Ghost of Yōtei – Everything we know so far about the sequel to Tsushima

A samurai looks out of Mount Yotai in Ghost of Yotai

The stunning Ghost of Tsushima may have only just made it to the PC as Sony continues its love-in with bringing its games to the format, but there is a new PS5 Pro on the horizon as well and there will need to be beautiful games to help sell it and Ghost of Yōtei could turn out to be one of those.

This time around, Sucker Punch is giving us a new protagonist, Atsu, and a new time period, the early 1600s. Sucker Punch’s Senior Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb said in a developer post announcing the game, “This is also Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and we’re excited to build on the visual foundation we established in Ghost of Tsushima by making the world feel even more real.

“We have massive sightlines,” he continued, “that lets you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future. Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”

Ghost of Yōtei Trailer

Sony September 2024 State of Play was a good one and it was here we got our first confirmation that a long-rumored sequel to Tushima was finally a reality with a cinematic trailer that immediately had us wanting to play Ghost of Yōtei.

Racking up some two million YouTube views in the first few hours alone the trailer, set in 1603 sees “Atsu set out on a journey in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, an area filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers.”

The three-minute-long showcase is more like a movie trailer than a game trailer at this stage but sets the scene for Atsu’s adventures in the beautiful foothills of Mount Yōtei.

When is Ghost of Yōtei set? Is it a sequel or a prequel?

Atsu’s journey takes place in 1603, which is some 300 years later than Jin Sakai’s story in Ghost of Tsushima. Goldberg said, “Our story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in the present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.”

Ghost of Yōtei expected release window

Sucker Punch and Sony have said that Ghost of Yōtei will release in 2025, with no further narrowing down of that window at this stage. Ghost of Tsushima released in July 2020 so if we get that far we will have been a full five years between the two games.

Is Mount Yōtei real?

Mount Yōtei is a real mountain and can be found in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Hokkaidō, Japan. Many people compare the inactive volcano to Mount Fuji and it is also referred to as Ezo Fuju, with Ezo being the term historically used to refer to people and lands northeast of the island of Honshu. These days the area is referred to as Hokkaidō.

Mount Yōtei last erupted in 1050 BC.
