Sony has just revealed the pricey, yet powerful PS5 Pro, which aims to provide gamers with even more oomph for their playthroughs in both new and old ‘Enhanced’ games.
While the tech giant is touting this new hardware as their “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date”, boasting “45% faster rendering for gameplay”, there’s some bad news for those hoping to get a silky smooth GTA 6 experience, with new reports stating that the Pro will struggle to surpass 30 FPS.
This news comes from an IGN interview with gaming technical analysis guru Digital Foundry, who is implying that it would be an unreal expectation to see GTA 6 running at 60 FPS on the PS5 Pro.
While you might think that this is blasphemy based on the vast improvements to the console’s GPU, for example, Digital Foundry suggests that there’s one issue that will plague higher frame rates – the CPU.
“The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5” and it would be very difficult “to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps” states Richard Leadbetter, technology editor at Digital Foundry.
This is mainly due to GTA titles having “complex simulations that push the CPU hard,” and due to the CPU being four-year-old tech even now, it will be working overtime when the official GTA 6 release date arrives.
Leadbetter goes on to say that “every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps”. So, it actually shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that 30 FPS is the number of choice from Rockstar here, no matter the hardware.
Leadbetter does suggest that the PS5 Pro will be capable of “higher quality visuals”, and potentially “more stable performance” thanks to the “10 percent bump to clock speeds” of the CPU in this newer console.
Whether this is a deal breaker for you when it comes to thinking about purchasing the expensive mid-generation upgrade, it is still completely down to personal preference.
One thing is for sure though, despite any FPS talk, if GTA 5 is anything to go by, GTA 6 will be one of the best selling games of all time.
