iPhone 6 enjoyers will say goodbye to WhatsApp in 2025

WhatsApp has announced it will drop support for older iPhone models, impacting users of the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. The change, announced through beta updates, will take effect on May 5, 2025. After this date, the app will require iOS version 15.1 or later, as it currently supports iOS 12 and above.

WhatsApp drops support for older iPhones by 2025

As part of its upcoming update, WhatsApp will no longer function on several older devices. Specifically, the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will be unable to support WhatsApp after the specified date. Users currently relying on these devices will need to update to a more recent model compatible with iOS 15.1 or later. This requirement aims to improve the app’s capabilities and reliability, leveraging updated APIs and technologies only available in more recent iOS versions.

Notably, as reported by WABetaInfo, the app will notify users with an alert encouraging them to upgrade their devices. The messaging reads: “Update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp. WhatsApp will stop supporting this version of iOS after May 5, 2025.” For those with newer iPhones still operating on outdated software, upgrading may be a timely option to maintain access.

Apple has reported that only 9% of all iPhones are still operating on iOS versions earlier than 16, suggesting that a minimal portion of users may be greatly affected by this update. Given the age of the impacted models—launched eight to ten years ago—it is increasingly common for users to upgrade their devices.

For WhatsApp’s business model, guaranteeing a focus on the latest technological features is crucial. WhatsApp aims to ensure a more resource-effective development process and to provide new features that take advantage of the latest iOS advancements.

Strategies for users affected by the updates

Users of the affected iPhone models may need to consider purchasing new devices. WhatsApp offers guidance for affected users, suggesting they back up their chat histories via iCloud and utilize the Chat Transfer feature for transitioning to supported devices. This process will allow users to retain their chat and media history when they upgrade, maintaining continuity in their messaging experience.

For some additional context, a beta version of WhatsApp for iPad is also available, and it will drop support for the first-generation iPad Air, as well as the iPad Mini 2 and 3, in the same timeframe. This aligns with the overall strategy of updating feature support in tandem with supported operating systems.

Apart from these changes, WhatsApp has recently rolled out several new features. These include voice message transcripts for all users, as well as the capability to tag others in status updates. Such enhancements signal WhatsApp’s commitment to continual improvement, even as it phases out support for older devices.
