Maximum Football – the free football game aiming to give EA, College Football and Madden a run for their money

Electronic Arts proved that there is a place for a decent College football game earlier in the year when it rebooted the famous old franchise to sit beside Madden in the limited offering for football games on any format.

EA being EA hoovered up licenses and individual college players, paying a reported $600 to each one to sign their life away and appear within the game but does that actually matter – do people need to have players that are actually real? And does it matter if your game is actually free to play?

That’s the premise behind Maximum Entertainment’s slightly se;f-titled Maximum Football, which has just released on Early Acess on Steam – for free.

A variety of online multiplayer and single-player modes await players, and the game is promising a customizable gridiron experience will just the beginning. More modes will follow next year, including Franchise (professional football) and Career Mode, with much more planned as Maximum Football continues to evolve. You can upload and design your own logos which means realistically somebody is going to put the real people in, doesn’t it?

While the core game is free to play, there will be a “selection of premium content available for purchase”.

There also looks to be a sort of Ultimate Team card system built in, but the fact you don’t need to invest in this and can just jump in and play a few games to see if it’s for you is super appealing in a world of expensive sports sims that are then packed with microtransactions as well.
