PlayStation rumor gathers steam – Microsoft set to unveil ‘big’ Xbox game for Sony’s console – but what could it be?
We are fast arriving at the second half of the games show season for 2024 with Gamescom on the horizon. We are expecting lots of cool stuff there such as the Civilization VII big reveal, but news is growing that Microsoft is set to announce a big game that will be heading to PlayStation as part of its strategy to get people playing Xbox games on all platforms.
Having gone soft with the first couple with Grounded, Pentinent, and then Sea of Thieves, anticipation is growing that this could be one of the bigger titles from the previously Xbox Exclusive line-up.
Whatever it is seems likely to annoy Xbox fans and there will doubtless be a flurry of “I want a refund, I only bought an Xbox for this” type comments, because, well, the internet, but there are a few likely candidates unless Microsoft pulls a rabbit out of its hat.
There is a lot of excitement around it being Forza Horizon 5. We can’t see that just yet, although it would be a huge hit. Jez Corden over at Windows Central also doesn’t believe it will be the Xbox’s flagship racing game, just yet at least.
Microsoft seems to be stepping up the size of the game going across the water, maybe in an effort to temper Xbox fan’s fury, so with that in mind we could see something like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 cross the divide.
It did okay on Xbox, was definitely missed on the PlayStation, and would not be likely to cause as much outrage as a Forza or Halo at this stage. Porting either of those IPs when the time comes will be a big moment with PlayStations fanboys dancing around the Xbox is Dead totem and Xbox fanboys unplugging in fury. There’s no way we are at that point right now and if we are I will delete this page secretly and pretend I was right all along.
I also can’t see it being an announcement that the new Indiana Jones game is now coming to PS5 also. The Xbox does still need to sell units.
Starfield is another game that gets mentioned regularly but now is not its time either. Microsoft Flight Simulator is also a game that has been mentioned previously, and while there is an undoubted audience for the sim on a console, as proved by the Xbox version, it would be a big leap, even with a new version slated for later this year.
Which all leaves us where we started – in the dark and it’s all rumors of course so absolutely nothing may come of it, but there is no smoke without fire. Watch this space.
