A sportsbook in Atlantic City has been fined for taking $25,000 worth of bets on games that had already happened.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement fined William Hill $20,000 for the bets it wrongly took which occurred in 2022 and 2023.
The sports betting company operates retail sportsbooks in Caesars, Harrah’s, and Tropicana casinos and was found to have taken bets on college basketball, hockey games, and boxing matches.
According to the documents that have been made public, the company took 42 bets through in-person kiosks on 12 college basketball games after the game had already concluded.
William Hill paid out just over $5,000 to customers on six bets before the issue became known which caused the remainder of the bets to be voided and the customers’ initial wagers to be returned.
Sports betting firm fined: Took bets on games that had already finishedThe company had blamed its sportsbook content supplier which is responsible for providing event data to the platform, according to The Associated Press. It was then in another instance where the operator took bets on a boxing match that it was advertising as starting at noon.
However, the match actually started earlier at 11:15am and finished at 11:55am. This took place on June 11, 2022, but the error happened again some months later. It was in April of 2023 when bets were taken on a fight after it had already ended, with the company listing it was started at noon.
The fight actually began at 11:55am and ended swiftly after as there was a knockout 45 seconds later.
In the same week that William Hill was fined, the New Jersey regulators also fined the London-based technology company Amelco for allowing the sportsbook PlayUp to take a bet on who could be the next US president.
The Australian-based PlayUp no longer exists in the United States as they ceased its sports betting operations here in 2023.
Amelco has been hit with a $10,000 fine for allowing the company to take a bet in March 2022 on Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to become the next US president.
